As the population of people on earth keeps accelerating, there is an urgent need to find a lasting solution to malnutrition, famine, and food shortages affecting this mass population, especially people in rural areas.

This prompted relevant scientists to solve the intense need for food through modified genetic technology. Although this is a welcome idea and a great innovation, there is still some atom of fear, concerns, myth, and empirical fact about the creation.

What is Genetic modification Technology? 

Gene modification technology can be described as a unique gene technology that affects the gene sequence of living organisms (e.g., Animals, Plants, Microorganisms, and Macro-organisms) through the insertion of genes extracted from one organism to another modification of genes.

Advantages of Genetic modification Food

1. Capacity to resist insects

Gene Modification of food crops has been boosted with the capacity to resist pests and diseases. Academic research described that harmful bacteria, which are predominantly dangerous to problems alone and safe for humans, are added to crops to repel any insect invasion. However, it reduces the usage and vulnerability of pesticides on crops.

2. Production of a Larger amount of crop

With the invention of gene modification technology for plants, it is easier to produce plants that have been modified to resist pests and give farmers more capacity to produce more food crops.

3. Production of nutritional food crop

Gene modification technology has given an extensive avenue for scientists to add nutrients like vitamin and mineral content to food crops that have been in the crops before.

This enables people to get the appropriate nutrients needed, and many people living in poor communities t the essential nutrients from a single meal. An example is a bowl of rice enriched with vitamin A.

4. Availability of Cheap Food

As a result of Gene Modification technology, the production of food crops have increased with lower production cost, and the prices of food crop are going down. This enables poor people to access nourishable foods at very affordable prices and eventually alleviates poverty.

5. play a role in the reduction of Global Warming

The more crops are grown, the more oxygen available in the environment, reducing the number of Carbon molecules emitted into the atmosphere, which is the primary cause of Global warming.

6. New varieties 

Gene modification technology helps develop a new crop type with different soil textures, climate conditions, and soil compositions other than where such crop grows. For Instance, a different kind of tomatoes that can succeed in salty soil has been developed by experts.

7. Production of Crops with better capacity

Gene modification technology is projected to create food crops that can grow in any weather conditions, which breaks the limitation of growing some crops in a particular place that suits the crop. This will enable more production of crops in any part of the world without restriction on weather conditions or soil textures. 

Flaws of Genetic modification Food

1. Reduces biodiversity level 

One of the flaws of gene modification technology is that essential organisms in the ecosystem are affected, which might reduce biodiversity levels.

When we dispose of some pests out of the ecosystem, this is dangerous to plants; we may also be disposing of a food supply for a particular species. In addition, genetically changed plants might be poisonous to a few organisms, which can result in their decreased numbers or maybe extinction.

2. Allergy to Food

Genetical Modified Food has a high tendency to cause more allergies in humans. This is because human bodies respond differently to food crops, and with the creation of GM food crops, there is a more abnormal reaction to the new varieties.

3. Prevalence of different variants of diseases

Because most genetically modified foods are made using toxic bacteria, there is a tendency for new diseases to emerge, which might be very harmful to humans and life in general. 

4. Nutritional Depletion

Just as Gene modification technology can boost the nutrients of food, it can as well reduce the nutrient. During Gene modification of food crops, some important might reduce by the bacteria used for the change.

A division of food chemistry, food tech, and food contaminants under the FDA once warned against the depletion of nutrients during Genetic modification of foods.

5. Toxin release

Food genetically modified may cause the release of toxins that might be dangerous and harmful to humans. This might result from damage to some crucial genes during insertion or when the gene inserted is not accepted by the new host.
